Pheasant season is coming at different times and at different places around The Daily Journal region.
Ringneck hunters will hit the fields on Wednesday at the DesPlaines Fish & Wildlife Area near Wilmington and at the Iroquois County Wildlife Area near Beaverville. Hoosier pheasant hunters start their pheasant, quail and rabbit seasons on Nov. 6 and Illinois’ pheasant season opens statewide on Nov. 7.
For more on pheasant hunting in Kankakee, Iroquois and Will counties, check out the Outdoors section in this Friday’s print edition of The Daily Journal.
Here are some updates on the Indiana season that arrived to late from biologist Budd Veverka for our print edition this week.
The Indiana cottontail rabbit season is Nov. 6 to Feb. 15, 2010.
Rabbit hunting opened Oct. 1 at the Jasper-Pulaski, Kankakee, Kingsbury, LaSalle and Willow Slough and at 21 other locations around Indiana.
“Cottontail number should be as good or betterthan last year’s harvest of 196,633,” Veverka said.
Pheasant season runs Nov. 6 to Dec. 20 in Indiana. Bag limit is two and possession four birds. Onely cock pheasants may be taken. “Pheasant numbers are low but stable,” Veverka said. “I expect a similar harvest to that of last year’s 6,300 birds.”
Indiana’s quail season are divided by Indiana Route 26. The north zone is Nov. 6 to Dec. 20. The south zone is Nov. 6 to Jan. 15, 2010.
“Quail numbers remain low and continue to decline statewide,” Veverka said. “Southwest Indiana, typically the best region for quail, has seen a significant decline this year according to both spring whistle counts and fall covey counts. I expect the harvest to be significantly lower than the 20,500 quail taken last year.”
