A new “fish ladder” went into operation on Thursday at Yorkville that allows fish to freely move past the dam along 41 miles of the Fox River.
The structure is part of safety improvements at the Glen D. Palmer dam at Yorkville in Kendall County. The ladder is formed by a concrete chute with aluminum baffles that allow fish to burst up the four “steps” of the fish ladder. At each step the baffles dissipates the force of the river’s current and allows fish to rest before continuing on up the ladder.
The Denil fishway is the first of its kind in Illinois according to Illinois Department of Natural Resources spokesman Chris McCloud. It allows fish “to move between the tail water below the Yorkville dam and the upstream pool while leaving the elevated pool intact.

Thursday’s budget meeting will be at Joliet Township High School’s west campus, 401 N. Larkin Ave. Monday night the meeting at KCC will be at the Auditorium at the River Road campus.
