Conservation aids migrating waterfowl

On a cold and damp winter morning, a stand of flooded timber in southern Arkansas is prime real estate. Not just for the rice farmers or timber barons of the region, but for the throngs of mallards, other species of waterfowl and hunters alike, all brought together by a mass migration, ideal habitat and a love for one of North America’s most recognized ducks.

IHSA explores high school bass tourney proposal

A proposal to launch bass fishing tournaments for high school students next year is on the Monday, Jan. 14, Illinois High School Association agenda.

The plan would offer competitive bass fishing opportunities to students. At heart it is similar the high school golf and tennis tournaments that have grown in popularity in recent decades.

Several years ago Reed Custer High School at Braidwood included a basic fishing class in its physical education program. “We had to drop the program several years ago due to budget cuts,” explained coach Rich Vana.

There the concept was similar to the bass tourney plan. “We saw fishing, like golf or tennis, as a recreational sport that people could enjoy for the rest of their life.”
