Fishing low water

It’s all about breathing and comfort.

Quite simply those are the two factors that drive fishing on the Kankakee River when water levels fall.

Breathing seems a strange thought for fish that live in the water but that’s exactly the key to finding fish .

Two great ideas

Just this morning a couple of great ways to help kids came across my desk at The Daily Journal.

One is aimed at providing a day of fun for the children of those serving in the Armed Forces. The other is an Aug. 11 youth sports camp that will give Kankakee area youngsters some practical hands-on instruction in the shooting sports, archery and fishing.

Derby sets new cat record

The 24th annual Kankakee River Fishing Derby ended with a bag Sunday despite shimmering waves of heat that hung over the river during the final hours.

Amazingly Randy O’Connell of Peotone tied into not one but two tagged fish. His double came on catching two tagged smallmouth bass; “Happy Hooker, worth a $500 savings bond from Beaupre Towing, and “Curly” for $500 in services from Patio Styling Salon. (more…)

Derby glitches fixed

It looks like the qremlins that have plagued the fishing derby’s Web site are slowly going away.

By 9:50 a.m. today the errors on the tagged fish list had been corrected and glitches fixed on the Big Board. (more…)

Sunday’s update on derby tags and leaders

Cash and prizes are being claimed at a brisk pace as action in the Kankakee River Valley Fishing Derby moves into Smallmouth Searching Day today.

Technical problems are continuing to plague the derby’s web site, leading to at least one confusing entry showing Tom Price of Bradley twice on the list of tagged fish winners. “Right now we can add but cannot edit mistakes on the web site,” said Linda Hubert who manages the derby’s on-line postings.

As of 9:30 a.m. seven tagged fish had been culled from the river. (more…)
