BEREA, Ohio (AP) - The Cleveland Browns have fired coach Eric
Mangini following a second straight 5-11 season that ended with a
humiliating home loss to the rival Pittsburgh Steelers.
He was
dismissed during a Monday morning meeting with team president Mike
Holmgren. The club announced his dismissal in a statement.
Mangini
went just 10-22 with the Browns and finished his second season with a
four-game losing streak. Cleveland went 2-6 following an upset of NFL
heavyweight New England on Nov. 7 — a victory that seemed like a turning
point. Instead, it only triggered a slide.
Mangini’s ouster
seemed set long before Sunday’s 41-9 loss, and the rout certainly didn’t
help his cause with Holmgren, the Super Bowl-winning coach who may
return to the sideline.

Clay Harbor’s first touchdown of his NFL career was so good, the opposing team didn’t believe he made it.
Harbor, a Dwight High School graduate and current tight end for Philadelphia, made a spectacular TD grab in the back of the end zone to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead in the first quarter against Minnesota on Tuesday night at home.
After grabbing the ball thrown by Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick, Harbor dragged his feet near the back of the end zone to stay in bounds. Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier challenged the ruling of touchdown, but the play was upheld.

CHICAGO (AP) - Pete Rose Jr., the son of the career hits leader who is banned from baseball, will run a rookie league team of the Chicago White Sox.
Rose Jr. played 21 seasons of minor league baseball with several organizations, including the White Sox. He appeared in 1,918 minor league games and had a .271 batting average. He was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 12th round in 1988.
He will run the Bristol, Va., affiliate in the Appalachian League.
In 1997, Rose Jr. got a small taste of the big leagues with the Cincinnati Reds — his father’s primary team when he played — when he appeared in 11 games, going 2 for 14.
Chicago also said Joe McEwing will manage the Triple-A team in Charlotte, moving up from Class A Winston-Salem, and former Blue Jays star Devon White, with 346 career steals, will be a base-running instructor in the minors.
