As of 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Heath Leger had won a posthumous Academy Award for best supporting actor in “The Dark Knight,” Penelope Cruz had won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in the Woody Allen comedy “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and the robot adventure story ”WALL-E” had won the best animated feature Oscar. Ledger’s parents and sister accepted the Oscar on behalf of Ledger’s young daughter.

Michael Crichton, the million-selling author who made scientific research terrifying and irresistible in such thrillers as “Jurassic Park,” “Timeline” and “The Andromeda Strain,” has died of cancer, his family said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court refused Monday to disturb a $74 million judgment against Dish Network Corp. for violating a patent held by TiVo Inc. involving digital video recorders.
Without comment, the justices declined to consider Englewood, Colo.-based Dish’s appeal.
