Bessie Johnson — Kankakee

Bessie Kate Johnson, 61, of Kankakee, died Tuesday (April 27, 2010). Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Wednesday, until the 11 a.m. funeral service at the Ervin Funeral Home in Kankakee. The Rev. Robert Ervin will officiate.

Marie Boseo — Manhattan

Marie Haley Boseo of Manhattan, died Friday (April 30, 2010) at her home. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Forsythe Funeral Home, 507 S. State St. in Manhattan, and from 9:30 a.m. Monday until the procession to St. Joseph’c Church, 345 W. North St. in Manhattan, for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial.

Richard Dandelles — Tampa, Fla.

A memorial service for Richard Lee “Rich” Dandelles, 62, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Kankakee, will be held at noon, Saturday, May 8, in the mausoleum at Mound Grove Gardens of Memories in Kankakee. Mr. Dandelles died April 15, 2010.

• In the end, death came to Brain Richard Nelson by his own hand, rather than the state’s, for the murder of a rural Custer Park family eight years ago.
Nelson’s body was found at 2:30 a.m. Thursday hanging in his single death row cell at the Pontiac Correctional Center.

• Smallmouth fever continues to rise on the Kankakee River, with cool nights extending the spawning season. Find out more in Outdoors.

• You can’t spell “wind” without “win,” and neither Manteno or Peotone could claim Thursday night’s crucial Interstate Eight Conference high school girls’ soccer match without winning the wind.

Coming in print: April 29, 2010

• Two films from the Roger Ebert’s Film Festival 2010 will be shown next weekend at the Watseka Theatre.

• Whether it’s baking bread, cookies or cake, 32-year-old Grant Heatherwick of Peotone, enjoys experimenting with and baking recipes handed down through the generations. Today, Grant continues to learn from his grandmother, Leatrice Buck.

• The Manteno High School softball team did just about everything it needed to do to topple its visitors from Momence on Wednesday — except keep Krystal Meyer off the bases. When playing the Redskins, that’s kind of important.
