Kris Honel, of Bourbonnais, signed a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend.
The No. 1 pick (16th overall) of the Chicago White Sox in the 2001 amateur draft, Honel voluntarily retired last August as a member of the Birmingham (Ala.) Barons, the White Sox AA affiliate.
Mike Honel, Kris’ dad, said, Kris had tryouts last Friday with the Philadelphia Phillies as well as the Cardinals. Mike Honel said Kris pitched three simulated innings for St. Louis officials with his fastball being clocked between 93 and 94 mph.
Kris missed part of the 2005 season and all of the 2006 season with the Barons due to injury and then surgery on his right arm. Mike Honel said Kris signed a AA/AAA contract and was working out today in the Cardinal’ prospects mini-camp.
