Senate plan lets big earners get rebates

A plan to send $500-$1,000 rebates to all but the richest taxpayers advanced in the Senate Wednesday after Republicans and Democrats teamed to add aid for disabled veterans, the elderly and the unemployed to a House-passed economic recovery bill.

WSJ report: ‘Ice isn’t just for chilling drinks anymore, or for packing fish and treating sprains. It’s a hot snack. Some Sonic Drive-In franchises sell it in cups and in bags to go. Report: Kankakee Regional Landfill LLC and the ‘reformer’ in Cook County

Sun-times report: ‘Larry Suffredin — a self-styled reformer running for Cook County state’s attorney — lobbied for a landfill controlled by Fred Bruno Barbara, a businessman once charged with extortion and implicated in the mob bombing of a restaurant…State records show he also lobbied for Kankakee Regional Landfill LLC — a company tied to Barbara — in 2005, 2006, and 2007.’

Manteno bus involved in accident

Manteno School Bus No. 12 was involved in a minor accident at the intersection of 10000N Road and Illinois Route 50 at 3:25 p.m. today, according to a news release from the school district.

Twenty students were transported to Manteno High School for further evaluation and to be reunited with parents.

Energy Department scraps FutureGen project planned for Illinois

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Energy Department on Wednesday canceled a futuristic, virtually emissions-free coal plant scheduled to be built in Illinois and said it preferred to spend the money on a handful of projects around the country that would develop carbon capture and underground storage from coal power plants. Fed cuts a key interest rate for the second time in 8 days

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve on Wednesday cut a key interest rate for the second time in just over a week, reducing the federal funds rate by a half point. It signaled that further rate cuts were possible. (more…)
