Chicago woman fatally shot after trick-or-treating

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago police say a 39-year-old woman was fatally shot in front of her southwest side residence this evening after trick-or-treating with three young children.

Ryan’s fading hopes now in the hands of the Supreme Court

CHICAGO (AP) — George Ryan went to the nation’s highest court Wednesday with his fast-fading hopes of staying out of a windblown federal prison camp in Minnesota where inmates mop the floors and clean toilets.

Previous wife of police officer drowned in 2004; current wife missing

BOLINGBROOK, Ill. (AP) — Authorities said Wednesday they are looking again at the 2004 drowning death of a woman whose ex-husband — a 53-year-old suburban Chicago police sergeant — says his current wife is missing.

Halloween ‘teeth’ recalled

WASHINGTON - The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced an 11th-hour recall Wednesday to warn consumers that fake Halloween teeth sold by the tens of thousands since last year contain excessive amounts of lead.

Ryan loses bid to stay free on bail, Supreme Court next stop

CHICAGO (AP) — Saying it is time for former Gov. George Ryan to start his prison sentence, a federal appeals court canceled his bond Wednesday and left a last-ditch plea to the U.S. Supreme Court as his only hope.

Toys ‘R’ Us recalls 16,000 toys for lead

WASHINGTON - Toys “R” Us recalled about 16,000 Chinese-made Elite Operations toys because of lead contamination, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Wednesday.

Appeals court refuses Ryan bond

CHICAGO (AP) — Former Gov. George Ryan’s request to remain free on bond while he asks the U.S. Supreme Court to take his case was denied by a federal appeals court Wednesday, meaning he likely will have to go to prison next week.

Ryan still had a faint chance of getting his bond extended by the Supreme Court and was expected to make that request quickly.
