High winds blamed for crash

 A Kankakee man was hospitalized after he  lost control of his motorcycle in high winds on Illinois 17 west of Kankakee Sunday afternoon — one of at least two area injury crashes reported Sunday.

Brush fires whipped by wind keep firefighters busy

Brush fires near Momence, Herscher and west of Manteno kept firefighters busy Sunday. High winds and dry weather made conditions ideal for fires, officials said. So far, no injuries have been reported.

Tigers beat White Sox as Maggs wins batting title

CHICAGO (AP) _ Magglio Ordonez won his first AL batting title, getting three more hits Sunday and leading the Detroit Tigers over the Chicago White Sox 13-3 in a season finale between two disappointing teams.

The 2006 AL champion Tigers finished 88-74, while the 2005 World Series champion White Sox went 72-90.

Soriano hits record homer, NL Central champion Cubs head into playoffs with 8-4 loss to Reds

CINCINNATI (AP) _ With their leadoff hitter playing like Mr. September, the Chicago Cubs feel good about the month that comes next — the one where they’ve failed for the last 98 years.

Alfonso Soriano set a club record with his 14th homer in September, and the NL Central champions headed into the playoffs following an 8-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday that amounted to a light workout.

Now, the quest for a World Series begins again.

Lions overcome their mistakes to beat Bears 37-27

DETROIT (AP) _ The Detroit Lions turned a here-we-go-again loss into a new-look win.

The Lions scored an NFL-record 34 points in the fourth quarter as they overcame the Chicago Bears 37-27 Sunday. Jon Kitna threw two touchdown passes in the final quarter as the Lions broke the previous record by three points.
