CHICAGO (AP) — Governor Rod Blagojevich is moving forward with his plan to expand health care programs without approval from Illinois lawmakers.
The Democratic governor outlined a new program for sick or injured young adults.
It would provide coverage for people ages 19 through 21. Currently, state coverage through the All Kids program ends when someone turns 19.
His aides say the new bridge program will cost up to $20 million a year and serve about 7,000 people.
The governor failed to win legislative support for a major health care expansion this year. But he plans about $460 million worth of new spending anyway.
Blagojevich says he’ll come up with the money by cutting waste that lawmakers added to the budget.
