WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate ethics committee on Friday admonished Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill., for making “inconsistent, misleading or incomplete” statements about the circumstances surrounding his appointment to the seat once held by Barack Obama. The committee recommended no action beyond the letter.

Burris was appointed by disgraced former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was impeached and driven from office after he was accused of trying to sell the Senate seat.

• A convicted sexual predator indicted Wednesday on federal child pornography charges is scheduled to appear in court next week for these new charges. Former youth counselor Thomas Brian Fairclough, 37, of 746 S. Evergreen Ave., Kankakee, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Peoria.

• Hunters are in the fields today for the start of the seven-day shotgun deer season. The season, which runs through Sunday and resumes on Dec. 3 to 6, is the biggest draw of all deer hunting seasons, with over 390,000 permits issued in Illinois. Last year’s seven-day firearm season harvested 106,018 deer.

• The NAIA Cross-Country National Championships take place, well, across the country. Olivet Nazarene University will be sending its men’s team and two women to this year’s meet, held at the Fort Vancouver Historical Site in Vancouver, Wash. — by car, about 33 hours away. A former Christian youth counselor and convicted sex offender, was indicted Wednesday on federal child pornography charges after investigators said they discovered two new victims.

Thomas Brian Fairclough, 37, of 746 S. Evergreen Ave., Kankakee, has been in jail and held without bond since his Oct. 27 arrest. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in Peoria on one count each of production, distribution and possession of child pornography, and one count each of advertising and receipt of child pornography.

“Fairclough admitted that he had been downloading child pornography for over 12 years,” an FBI agent said in the affidavit.

“He identified users which he traded with the most, and stated that he had about 80 users which he traded child pornography with.”

WASHINGTON — The budding economic recovery isn’t getting much help from the home-building industry, which normally creates jobs and drives growth when a recession ends.

Uncertainty over whether a homebuyer tax credit would be extended weighed down construction last month — a sign of how much the fledgling recovery depends on government support.

Home building unexpectedly plunged to its lowest point since April, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. The figures show that builders fear there aren’t enough buyers to soak up the glut of unsold homes already on the market — a supply magnified by record-high foreclosures.
